Response to Ugandan
Pastor
Recently, Ugandan pastor
Martin Ssempa made
statements concerning
public policy regarding
homosexuals in that
nation. Philadelphia
Biblical University (PBU)
categorically condemns
any position that calls
for violence against
human beings created in
the image and likeness of
God, or violent solutions
to socially controversial
issues. While PBU holds
to a biblically defined
position regarding human
sexuality, to call for
such action clearly
violates the teaching of
the Bible, and the

Anglican Bishops in

We, the Bishops of the
Anglican Church in
Southern Africa, meeting
at Thokoza Conference
Centre, Swaziland, from 8
to 12 February 2010, are
disturbed by the debate
among Ugandan law-makers
of a draft bill that seek
to criminalize
homosexuality and to
prosecute gay people. It
even proposes imposing
the death penalty, which
we regard as a breach of
God's commandment,You
shall not murder, given
in Exodus 20:13. We also
deplore the statement,
attributed to our fellow
Bishop, describing those
who are opposed to this
legislation as "lovers of
evil". Though there are a

Hello fellow Human rights

guests and all Ugandans.
I am proud to stand
before you as a lesbian
today. With hearts full
of love and the abiding
faith in justice, we have
come to this place to
speak to Uganda.
We have come to speak the
truth of our lives and
silence the liars. We
have come to challenge
the cowardly anti gay

paralysis and exercise
moral leadership. We have
come to defend our honor

Calling for
accountability doesn't
start or stop at naming
offenders. Our goal is to

that governments must
also take responsibility
by putting human rights
into law and embedding
them in government
institutions; by building
strong, independent
courts and competent and
disciplined police and
law enforcement. And once
rights are established,
governments should be
expected to resist the
temptation to restrict
freedom of expression
when criticism arises,

preventing law from

oppression, as bills like

On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck
Grassley (R-IA) refused
to condemn the
Anti-Homosexuality Bill
being considered by the
Ugandan parliament,
saying that he was too
busy to comment on it,
and despite weeks of
international and
national news attention
(and pressure from the
group One Iowa), he
didn't know anything
about it. His
silencequickly

since other busy
lawmakers have spoken out
forcefully about it. But
on Friday, Grassley
finally came out with a
statement, calling the
Ugandan bill

Statement on

Our Christian faith
recognizes violence,
harassment and unjust
treatment of any human
being as a betrayal of
Jesus' commandment to
love our neighbors as
ourselves. As followers
of the teachings of
Christ, we must express
profound dismay at a bill
currently before the
Parliament in Uganda. The
"Anti-Homosexuality Act
of 2009" would enforce
lifetime prison sentences
and in some cases the
death penalty for
homosexual behavior, as

Thank you for convening

very serious concerns
raised this afternoon. My
comments are more in the
form of a statement
rather than a question.
As stated during the
debate of the General
Assembly last year, the
Holy See continues to
oppose all grave
violations of human
rights against homosexual
persons, such as the use
of the death penalty,
torture and other cruel,
inhuman and degrading
punishment.

The Centre for Human

of the introduction into
the UgandanParliament of
the "Anti Homosexuality
Bill, 2009". We are of
the very strong view that
this Bill should notbe
adopted. It not only
violates the Ugandan
Constitution and Uganda's
international human
rightsobligations, but
also stifles debate,
undermines civil society
and demeans the common
citizenship of

Pr. Stephen Langa in his
presentation described
what he calls the "gay

gay activists to create a
utopia with no
restriction of sexual
practices. It is an
attempt "to overthrow the
moral base of society
based on marriage and
family.. ..they want to
overthrow that and bring
about a new order based
on sexual anarchy."
He cited a British and a
Russian social scientist
to say that societies go
down whenever their is
amoral behaviour, which
he believes homosexuality
is. He accused the 'gay

focus from a moral
